DO NOT BUY. Have had the mounting cups crack on all 3 of the mounts I installed. The 4th one has not cracked yet because it it is still in the box.
The mounts (excluding the cups) are solid. When they stay in they are in the perfect position for turn signals, and make the bike super visible, its awesome.
HOWEVER, the plastic cups at the end that wedge the mount into the handlebar are TERRIBLE. They keep cracking resulting in the handle mount falling out.
The cups are a hard plastic where a nut pushes the cup agains a dome to have the cup spread and wedge itself in the handlebar. The hard plastic cracks after a week of riding and the mount falls out. I have standard road bike handlebars and am using the larger size of the cups. The cup barely slides in past the folded in bar tape, it only needs to expand the thickness of the bar tape, and it can't.
For clarification, the cup goes past the folded in bar tape of the of the handlebar as my tape is folded in at most 1/2 of an inch into the handlebar.
Similar to others, the "spider" part broke on one side without any external stress apart from fast rides on a cobbled street.
The mount was broken very quickly!! and now it´s sold out!
DO NOT PURCHASE THESE. I loved the handlebar mounts at first but they're unreliable and prone to breaking. I'm not sure whether Lumos tested these for a long time with high-vibration bicycle routes but I've finally decided to stop using them after multiple components have broken, including one cracking in half at the midpoint. I accidentally bought two sets because the Kickstarter documentation wasn't clear about what was included and I'm glad I did because it allowed me to use these for a longer period of time but they're totally unreliable in the end.
The rubber guards on the mounts seemed like a good idea until every time my bike leaned against something would loosen them. The rubber insert is also just tabbed in so I've had them fall out multiple times. The inserts that go into the handlebars are flimsy plastic with obvious stress points. Because they're weaker than the threaded rod they're attached to, they receive a substantial amount of stress if the handlebar mounts move at all. An aluminum or steel insert would have been more resilient and less prone to stress fractures. Over-tightening the inserts is very easy to do and will break them, You can't see what the tightening is doing so it's impossible to verify if you've secured the end mount properly or over-tightened and have already broken the insert. Even a textured silicone gasket to wrap the insert and mitigate vibration transferred to the plastic pieces of the handlebar mount would have helped. It's mind-boggling that these rely on a plastic to metal friction to stay seated inside handlebars and it's obvious that sustained vibration would slowly work the end mounts out of the handlebars while weakening the plastic components at very obvious stress points. While biking on a busy street, my right handlebar mount just cracked in half and fell off of my bike, leaving me to jump off and dodge cars to retrieve it and the still attached light from the street. Luckily, I had an intact mount to replace the broken one with but I'm tired of monitoring the handlebar end mounts as they slowly work their way out of the handlebars. That's stress that's not worth paying $30 for. I've included a photo of the broken mount and various broken inserts. The only reason I've been able to use the mounts for the past six months is that I had replacement parts from accidentally buying two sets during the Kickstarter campaign. Had I not done that, I would have had to stop using the end mounts months ago because of the breakage.
I'm honestly kind of furious about this how poorly designed these are in comparison to the turn signal mount, the charging pad and the lights themselves. No one should buy these until Lumos revises the design and makes it hardier. I don't care if they cost $20-40 for a set of these if they are actually built to last. It's clear that these materials are not up to the task and these mounts do not solve the problem they set out to in the long term. I'm glad I got about six months of use out of the four handlebar end mounts I purchased but I'm out $30 at the end of the day. I had been waiting for the mounts to come back into stock because I do like the functionality but they're so poorly engineered that I can't get on board unless they design better ones. Really, really disappointing from an industrial design and ergo perspective. An incredible idea with absolutely gutting execution. I believe I'm owed two sets of handlebar end mounts at this point but, frankly, I don't want them because all these are is a great way to unexpectedly drop your Firefly lights on the street in the middle of a ride.
I would absolutely consider buying a well-designed version of the handlebar end mounts but this is not that. It's not worth the risk of losing your lights or fiddliness required to unscrew and reseat these every time you notice they're getting loose. I'm resigned to using the universal mounts strapped to the sides of my handlebars and that will have to be good enough. As a big fan of the Lumos helmets and the Firefly lights I cannot overstate my disappoint with how poorly designed these mounts are. They are unsuitable for use in any environment with vibration, like biking anywhere but a velodrome. DO NOT BUY.
I love it! The magnets held the Firefly light well, and it gave great visibility to other road users. The main problem I have with this is how easily the mount breaks. I have gotten a replacement from Lumos, but they might want to consider either changing the material for the expanders or allowing us to purchase it independently.
